JS Bach Laß, Fürstin, laß noch einen Strahl, BWV 198 Missa 1733, BWV 232i
We begin the 2020 season of ‘Bach the European’ with two pieces associated with the Saxon Royal Family in Dresden. Laß, Fürstin, laß noch einen Strahl sets the text of a funeral ode by Johann Christoph Gottsched with music that goes against the grain of the poetic style. Commissioned by the University of Leipzig for the memorial service of the Electress of Saxony, Christiane Eberhardine, the work is inextricably linked to the Missa of 1733 (the initial version of what became the Kyrie and Gloria of the Mass in B minor), which was dedicated to the Electress’s husband, Augustus II, as a showcase of Bach’s ability to outdo his Dresden contemporaries in their own style of music.
Performed on historical instruments.
